Weight Management

This section includes information on planned weight loss support and is relevant if we feel weight loss could help us feel healthier.

For more general information about healthy eating visit NHS Inform Healthy Living pages or if you’d prefer to make your own changes visit our Making Changes Myself page.

The term ‘weight management’ is used to describe strategies that help us to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Most weight management strategies focus on the long-term changes we can make to improve health and wellbeing and programmes usually include a weight loss phase, followed by a weight maintenance phase.

Losing weight safely and realistically, in a way that suits our lifestyles, is the best approach.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is a measure used to ensure we get support in the appropriate service, we can calculate our BMI using this BMI calculator. Some services can be accessed directly via self-referral and others require a referral from our GP or health professional:

If your BMI between 25 – 34.9, please see the ‘how we can support you’ section below

If your BMI is 35 or above, you can contact your Health Centre to arrange a referral to the Dietetics Department.
