Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Motivational Interviewing is a style of communication which is useful to those who have discussions with individuals about making changes to their lifestyle or health behaviours. This style of communication supports and empowers individuals to make changes by exploring their capacity to change with empathy and takes into account how difficult making changes can be.

Having an MI conversation required a balance of both being a good listener and giving information and advice where requires, whilst being respectful to the individual to make their own choices and changes.

If you are interested in learning more about MI and you are a professional who supports individuals to make changes, there is a free introduction course available at Motivational Interviewing in Brief Conversations – Scottish Drugs Forum (sdftraining.org.uk)
