Electric bikes, or e-bikes for short, is a bicycle with the addition of a motor to assist you when cycling. E-bikes help us get up hills easier, travel about faster and carry heavier loads whilst getting some exercise and having fun!

NHS Shetland has a pool of 12 e-bikes for staff to use for workplace journeys. These are available across different sites including health centres, Montfield and Gilbert Bain Hospital. If you are an NHS Shetland staff member you can access the e-bike by collecting the keys, battery, hi-viz and helmet from reception. Before using the e-bike you must:

  • Read the Getting Started Guide
  • Review the e-bike guidance documents
  • Complete e-bike safety checks
  • Sign the access form
  • And complete the sign out sheet at reception

Join the NHS Shetland Active and Sustainable Travel Microsoft Team to keep up to date on active travel and e-bikes. There is a Facebook page for NHS Shetland Active Travel

The NHS Shetland pool e-bikes are not for personal use or commuting, if you are interested in getting your own e-bike the Cycle to Work scheme supports staff to purchase a bike at a salary sacrifice. If you would like to trial an e-bike for a longer period, contact the Shetland Community Bike Project.
