Walking is one of the best and most accessible ways to improve your health and wellbeing — and you don’t have to do it alone. Joining a walking group can be a great first step, helping you discover local routes, build confidence, and meet new people along the way.

We work alongside the Scottish walking charity ‘Walking Scotland’ to support volunteers in leading community walks — helping more people across Shetland become active through walking.

Walk da Rock is our local initiative, supporting trained Walk Leaders to run welcoming walking groups in communities across Shetland. The project is delivered by us in the Healthy Shetland Team (NHS Shetland Health Improvement), in partnership with SIC Sport & Leisure and Walking Scotland.

Our goal is to help people who are less active take that first step towards moving more.

What are Health Walks?

Health Walks are short, friendly, and easy-paced walks designed to help people feel more active, connected, and confident. Led by trained walk leader volunteers, they are:

  • Short and manageable — walks last no longer than one hour
  • Free to join — there’s no cost to take part
  • Open to everyone — especially those wanting to become more active
  • Social and welcoming — a chance to meet new people and enjoy good company
  • Safe and accessible — routes have been risk assessed and are designed to suit a range of abilities and fitness levels

Interested in setting up your own walk?

We are always looking for more volunteers to keep the walks going and grow the project. If you’d like to set up your own walk in your community and join our walk da rock project, get in touch with us. We have local Walk Leader training available as well as online options for anyone who wants to become a volunteer walk leader. The course includes resources and practical information to help you set up, advertise and lead walks for the community.

I love walking! The benefits of regular walking are endless, both mentally and physically. Becoming a walk leader brought me to realise the social benefits of walking and how important it can be for people to get out and about in their local communities. Walking should be free and accessible for everyone and as a walk leader I hope to share my love of walking with as many of you as possible
