Population Health Survey

In 2021 the Health Improvement Team led the project of conducting a Population Health Survey for Shetland. It has been an ambition of the NHS Shetland’s Public Health Team to complete a population level assessment covering a range of topics that would help the team and other services better understand the needs of people living in Shetland.

Over a number of months the Health Improvement Team leads and our Public Health data analyst reviewed existing health surveys to identify which topics and questions would be included in the local survey. Standardised questions were included so that the survey could be repeated in the future and would allow for comparison.

The survey was divided into two main sections:

 1. Demographics: questions about the respondents, where they live, how they use transport and their economic activity

2. Health and wellbeing: questions about both their physical and mental health, which included habits around alcohol, substances and tobacco use.

Between November 2021 and August 2022, 592 people responded with the overall results representing age, gender, and localities of local communities in Shetland.
