No Smoking Day 2026

No Smoking Day is taking place on Wednesday 11 March 2026. This year we are highlighting the benefits that can be gained by quitting smoking with the theme ‘Quit and Win’.

Quit and Win‘ encourages smokers to quit tobacco and nicotine AND win with physical health, mental wellbeing and personal finances.

The ‘Wins’ in your Mental, Financial and Physical Health

Mental Health

Quitting smoking provides significant mental health benefits, including improved mood, reduced anxiety and depression, and an increased sense of control and quality of life.

Whilst it is often thought that smoking relieves stress, the opposite is true in the long term. Nicotine provides a temporary sense of relief, but the subsequent withdrawal symptoms, such as irritability and tension, create a stress cycle that makes daily life more challenging. Studies have shown that after quitting, stress levels are generally lower than when smoking.

Research also indicates that the beneficial effect of stopping smoking on symptoms of anxiety and depression can be as significant as taking antidepressants. Quitting allows the brain’s natural chemicals, like dopamine and serotonin, to rebalance – leading to a more stable and positive mood over time.

Ex-smokers report feeling happier and more positive than when they smoked. Quitting is associated with an overall improved psychological quality of life and greater life satisfaction.

Smoking addiction can control your life; from constant cravings to planning daily activities around smoke breaks. Stopping smoking allows individuals to regain control over their daily thoughts and actions, leading to feelings of empowerment, which boosts self-esteem.

Smoking can interfere with the way some psychiatric medicines and antidepressants work, requiring higher dosages. When you quit, these medications work as intended, potentially allowing dosages to be reduced and resulting in fewer side effects.

Financial

The financial benefits of stopping smoking extend beyond the cost of cigarettes and paraphernalia. There are more hidden financial benefits, including:-

Lower insurance premium: Smokers often pay more for life, health, and critical illness insurance due to increased health risks; quitting can lead to significant savings on these premiums.

Reduced healthcare costs: lowered risk of smoking-related diseases (such as cancer, heart disease, and lung problems) which means fewer health care appointments and the associated travel costs etc.

Reduced dental expenses; the chemicals in tobacco can lead to gum disease and tooth decay, meaning smokers often face higher dental care costs. Quitting improves oral health and lowers these expenses.

By eliminating smoke odour this reduces costs for house and car cleaning, repainting, and replacement of items like carpets or curtains.

All of this can lead to saving money which can be spent on things you enjoy!

Physical Health

When you stop smoking tobacco and have had that last cigarette your health starts to improve immediately as a result. Within minutes and hours your heart rate and blood pressure return to normal as nicotine and carbon monoxide start to leave your body. Within days your sense of taste and smell improve and your lungs start to clear out mucus. Then within weeks your breathing improves and exercise feels easier; and so the health improvements continue.

Support to Quit

Quit Your Way Shetland programme is tailored programme designed to support people in Shetland who wish to stop smoking.

We are here to help you find your way to quit, and support and advise you on how to stay quit in the long term. By focussing on making lifestyle changes that work for you, this should make your quit feel more achievable. Research shows you are four times more likely to quit with specialist support plus NRT than you would be going it alone.

The service offers one-to one specialist support from a trained advisor, alongside free medication (such as Varenicline or Zyban) or Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT). NRT is free of charge for people looking to quit smoking (or vaping), and this gives you a safe, clean way to manage cravings.

Our friendly, non-judgmental and encouraging advisors are trained in techniques for smoking cessation. We are here to work with you to increase and re-inforce your motivation and readiness to quit – to listen how smoking fits into your life and why you want to quit. The programme typically takes 12-weeks to complete, but if you need support in the lead up, and afterwards, we can provide that too.

The QYW programme also offers free NRT in Shetland from your local community pharmacies, (for smoking cessation only, without extensive behavioural support).

Leaving tobacco and nicotine behind can be a daunting thought. Making a significant lifestyle change such as this is challenging, but help and support is available across Shetland. Our flexible programme can be delivered face to face, over the phone or video-call, or a combination of these.

What about vaping?

We are also a vaping friendly service. If you would prefer to stop smoking using a vape we can support you to do this.  We do not supply vapes but our team are trained to discuss the use of vapes as a stop smoking tool and can support you to choose the best approach for you.  Also, if you want to stop vaping, we can support you with this quit also.

If you would like to make those changes and you would like to make them now, then we would like to hear from you.
