Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a common long term (Chronic) condition where tissue usually found in the womb is found elsewhere in the body. It is very common, with around 1 in 10 of those who menstruate affected. It can have significant impacts on physical health, emotional wellbeing and daily lives.

Common symptoms include painful periods, pain in the lower abdomen, pelvis or back, pain during and after sex, difficulty getting pregnant and discomfort when going to the toilet. Symptoms can vary considerably, other conditions can cause similar symptoms-all which mean it is a difficult condition to diagnose.

The cause is unknown and there is no specific cure. Most people are diagnosed between the age of 25 and 40, with on average 8.5 years taken to receive diagnosis in Scotland.

Currently there is no cure for endometriosis, however there are treatments which can help control, or improve symptoms.
