“If physical activity were a drug, we would refer to it as a miracle cure, due to the great many illnesses it can prevent and help treat.”

UK Chief Medical Officers, 2019

Research consistently shows that being physically active has a powerful impact on both our health and wellbeing. But did you know that regular movement can also help prevent and manage more than 30 long-term health conditions?

Studies suggest that up to 40% of chronic conditions could be prevented through regular physical activity* — showing just how important moving more can be for staying healthy.

*By meeting the UK Chief Medical Officer’s recommendation of at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week.

Physical activity is not only important for preventing conditions from developing, but can also help us manange them, including diabetes, dementia, depression and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), among many others.

Getting active with a long-term health condition

In Scotland, findings from the Scottish Health Survey (2020) revealed that nearly half (47%) of adults live with a long-term condition, while almost one-third (31%) report a condition that limits day-to-day life.

Living with a long-term condition can be challenging, and there may be times when being active feels difficult or overwhelming. But even small amounts of movement can make a meaningful difference. Research shows that, for most people, the benefits of becoming more physically active far outweigh the risks.

The good news is that getting moving doesn’t have to feel complicated or overwhelming. Every movement counts, and finding ways to move that work for you can play an important role in managing long-term conditions, supporting wellbeing, and improving quality of life — one step at a time.
