The World Health Organisation defines sexual health as:
“…a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. For sexual health to be attained and maintained, the sexual rights of all persons must be respected, protected and fulfilled.”
(WHO, 2006a)

FAQs
What will happen at my sexual health appointment?
Before you go in for your appointment you will be given a brief questionnaire about your sexual health/lifestyle. This enables us you to signpost you to useful resources and tailor the appointment to your needs. For no-talk testing, the appointment will simply consist of you being provided with a sample collection kit, which you will then return, no questions asked.
Are Sexual Health Appointments Confidential?
Yes, and a separate appointment system to the hospital is used. This means that your attendance at the sexual health clinic will not show up on your main NHS record.
Who will be at my appointment?
Your appointment will be with one of the sexual health nurses. However, if you are not comfortable with the nurse taking your appointment it may be possible to request a different nurse.
Can I attend the sexual health clinic if I’m under-18?
Yes. The clinic is open to people under the age of 18, and parents do not have to be informed of your visit. However, as we have a duty to keep you safe, it is important to be aware that if there are any concerns about your safety then it may be necessary to inform other services on a need to know basis.
How will I find out test results?
You will only be notified of your test results are positive. This may be via a text, phone call, or email. It can take up to a week to hear back, but if you do not hear back after a week then your test is likely negative.
