National Walking Month 2025

May marks National Walking Month – a perfect opportunity to step outside, take in the fresh air, and embrace the longer and brighter days ahead. As the light returns and nature begins to bloom, it’s not just our bodies that benefit from time outdoors – our minds and our communities do too. Time spent outdoors in nature and natural light can help reset our body clocks, lift our mood, and improve sleep. And here in Shetland, we’re lucky to have stunning scenery right on our doorstep, turning even a short walk into a moment where we can unwind, clear our head, and feel recharged.

Walking is one of the most accessible ways to get moving, helping to prevent long-term conditions like heart disease, diabetes and some cancers, while also boosting mood and improving sleep. But walking is more than just exercise—it’s a way to connect and bring people together. And this year, with Mental Health Awareness Week (12–18 May) focusing on the theme of community, it’s the perfect time to explore how walking together can support our mental and social health. Walking with others – whether it’s a neighbour, friend, or local walking group – can be a simple yet effective way to lift mood, reduce loneliness, and build a stronger sense of connection with the people around us.

If you’re not sure where to start, there are plenty of simple ways to get walking this May. Join one of the local Walk da Rock groups happening across Shetland, or try a Peerie Wander from our newly refreshed booklets – these walks can be done at a level that suits any age or ability.  Or what about a meeting on the move? Our colleagues at Paths For All have created a helpful guide to plan and host walking meetings with your colleagues to bring even more movement into your workday or enjoy a lunchtime stroll with colleagues. However you choose to walk, the benefits go beyond the physical—it’s about feeling better, connecting with others, and making the most of the season.

So whether you’re walking to work, exploring a new coastal path, or joining a group walk, every step this May is a step towards a healthier, happier you.

“Communities can provide us with a sense of belonging, safety, support in hard times, and give us purpose.”
